Blackout Skylight Vinyl Installation

Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility | Blackout Window Film | Public Sector

Project Overview

Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility required a rapid turnaround blackout solution to allow a community Christmas pantomime to proceed after a last-minute venue change. The installation involved full-length roof skylights above the sports halls, where uncontrolled daylight was compromising stage lighting and visual effects.

What began as a temporary measure evolved into a permanent upgrade.

The Core Problem

The local council’s annual Christmas pantomime was forced to relocate at short notice due to structural issues at its usual venue. The alternative location was the sports facility which featured continuous roof-mounted translucent skylight panels running the full length of the hall.

While ideal for sport, these panels flooded the space with daylight. For theatrical lighting, this was a critical problem.

Uncontrolled natural light was:

  • Washing out stage lighting

  • Reducing contrast and visual impact

  • Undermining production quality

  • Threatening the viability of the event

Given the number of community and disabled participants involved in the show, cancellation was not an option.

Roof access and fall restraint compliance were mandatory due to the installation location.

The Specification Process

A full site survey was undertaken to assess:

  • Access issues and installation procedures

  • Substrate composition

  • Environmental conditions

  • Client needs

From this we were able to select the best material to suit the scope and design an action plan.

Technical Consideration

This was not simply “apply blackout vinyl.” The original brief was for a temporary installation for the duration of the pantomime so our vinyl choice and installation techniques had to ensure this was the case.

Key considerations included:

  • Working at height with rope and harness restraint systems

  • Ensuring compatibility with the existing translucent roof panels

  • Designing a solution suitable for temporary removal

  • Avoiding adhesive residue or surface damage on delicate plastic panels on removal

However, once installed, facility management recognised the functional benefits of improved light control within the hall and really liked the performance the vinyl had. A decision was made to retain the installation permanently instead

.

To ensure the vinyl would now have long term durability we had to make an immediate technical adjustment to where we done a full perimeter edge sealing of the vinyl to ensure no long term water ingress and upgraded detailing to extend lifespan.

Outcome

The result was immediate.

  • Full light exclusion across the sports hall

  • Stage lighting restored to intended performance levels

  • Show delivered successfully without cancellation

Client feedback was extremely positive, particularly given the time pressure and event sensitivity.

What began as a reactive solution became a permanent building upgrade — improving lighting control for future events and multifunctional use of the hall.
